Whether you’re moving or redecorating,
or if that old ratty chair has just finally gotten to you,
it’s easy to feel tempted to buy new furniture. “Out
with the old, in with the new” is an adage that might
ring through your mind as you stare at your old furniture
pieces. Though the easiest way to arrive at a new look for
a new space or a new version of your same old space would
be to get brand new furniture, it’s not always the best
way. New furniture may be fine, but it may also be overpriced
or poorly made. If you have a tried and true couch or chair,
you may want to consider hanging onto it.
We know what you’re thinking. “But it’s
so ugly! I can’t stand to have that thing in my house
one more day!” We get it. Sometimes an old furniture
piece has, indeed, seen better days. However, we’d ask
you to take a step back and examine the piece for its potential,
not its present state.
When might it be a good idea to refurbish an old piece rather
than get a new one? Read on for the many circumstances we’ve
encountered in which throwing that old piece out just isn’t
the best way to go.
If The Piece is Particularly “High
End”
How much did you pay for the piece originally? Just like tuning
up an expensive car or fixing up a house with huge potential,
putting a little time and effort into a furniture piece that
you spent a lot on is a better idea than ditching it altogether.
Many times, you won’t be willing to spend what you spent
on the original piece for its replacement. In this case, putting
money into the piece to bring it back to life is a great way
to keep what you originally invested in the piece by not getting
rid of it.
The Construction is Particularly Good
The best candidates for refurbishment are furniture pieces
that have an extremely solid construction. It’s hard
to find affordable pieces that are made with really solid
woods and that would be considered well constructed. If you
have a piece of furniture that was well made, don’t
get rid of it. The upholstery on the outside of the piece
can always be swapped out, whereas finding a skeleton that’s
really solid and good is not always as easy.
One of a Kind Pieces
Especially with antiques, it’s common to come across
a piece of furniture that you absolutely love the shape and
style of but that isn’t available in a wide range of
colors or patterns. Many people who frequent antique and thrift
shops buy on impulse because there is a very real chance that
they may never see a piece like the one they love again. If
you find something that’s one of a kind that would be
perfect if it just weren’t for the color, see the forest
for the trees. You can have that piece in a color or pattern
that you love just by being willing to reupholster it. |
