Upholstery Cleaning Methods

Upholstery is often thought of as the element that brings life to a room by giving comfort, color, and style to furniture pieces within a space. Because of upholstery’s important role in the room, it’s important to keep upholstery clean. Just as there are a wide variety of fabrics available for upholstering, there are a wide variety of ways in which to clean and condition them.

Vacuuming is an excellent way to clean most forms of upholstery. Like vacuuming your carpets, vacuuming furniture helps prevent the building up of dirt and dust. Vacuuming also prevents stains from settling into fibers. Before vacuuming, it’s important to tighten buttons and remove loose threads. Be gentle on weak areas of the fabric. A soft brush vacuum attachment should be used on upholstery, especially more delicate fabrics.

If something spills on your furniture, blot the spill rather than rub it. This soaks up the liquid or substance up without helping it seep into the fabric any further. If an especially large amount of liquid or substance spills, try to scrape it up with a dry towel or even a spoon and then blot the remaining spot.

For stain removal, spot cleaning is often a good approach because it allows you to clean only the affected area on the furniture piece. Before using any cleaning solvent or even water, make sure to check the manufacturer’s tips for the specific fabric on your furniture piece. Even if you’re following instructions, it’s a good idea to test your cleaning method on a part of the furniture piece that is hidden, like the back of the couch. This way, if the cleaning method causes any damage to the fabric, it won’t be in a place that’s conspicuous.

Every two or three years, a deep clean is in order for upholstered pieces. Be sure to read the manufacturer’s instructions on any furniture piece before attempting a deep clean – all fabrics have different qualities and not all cleaning products can be used on all. It’s a good idea to pick a cleaning solvent that contains a soil retardant to prevent future staining and make the effects of your deep clean linger. If frequent soiling remains a problem beyond the deep clean, you might consider applying a spray-silicon soil retardant which will assist in preventing spills from settling into stains.

If pets use your furniture, a quick cleaning method may simply be to remove pet hair from the furniture. There are many ways to do this, and certain tools have been created to assist, such as special brushes sold at pet stores. Lint brushes also work very well. If you’re in a time crunch or don’t have a lint brush, masking tape wrapped around the hand works just fine for collecting those pesky animal hairs!

When cleaning your upholstery, it’s important to be aware of what kind of fabric you’re using and what specific rules exist for that fabric. Be sure to check the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific furniture piece as well as any precautions on the labels of cleaning fluids.
